The Things Outdoor Gateway Teardown
Want to buy The Things Outdoor Gateway? We stock the EU 868 and US 915 models!
The Things Outdoor Gateway is one of 2019's most eagerly anticipated LoRaWAN products. A high quality gateway at a very competitive price, with PoE and a built-in 4G modem, this certainly grabbed attention! Designed to boost The Things Network coverage, or connect to a private instance, the gateway is designed for pole mounting and is built to survive the harsh outdoors.
We recently got our hands on some of the first units, and of course we pulled one apart! What did we find inside?
Well, first there's the chunky enclosure to get through. Weighing in at a couple of kilos, you don't want to drop this on your foot! It comes apart easily enough, and there's a nice waterproofing seal around the halves of the case.
The main board is all well made, and features the LoRaWAN chipset, processor and RAM, and network and PoE supply. We popped off the shielding cans and found the processor, a Rockchip RK3188. This is a popular device in tablets and budget laptops and is well supported by Linux distros, so it's a good choice for the gateway. Under the main board is the Quectel EC25-E LTE 4G modem, again with good support.
